Distribution of residual stresses in EB-PVD thermal barrier coatings

As a bond coating, CoNiCrAlY was pressureless plasma-sprayed on a substrate of nickel-base superalloy. As the top coating, zirconia with 4 mol yttria was coated by the electron beam-physical vapor deposited (EB-PVD) on the substrate which was rotating during coating. The rotation speed of the in-plane was 5, 10 and 20 rpm. The thickness of the top coating was about 0.12 mm. The distribution of the in-plane residual stress was measured by a conventional X-ray method. The distribution of the out-of-plane residual strain was measured by a strain scanning method with hard synchrotron X-rays. For the specimen with 20 rpm, the in-plane residual stress was small within the range from -20 to 30 MPa, the out-of-plane residual stress was a very small compression. A columnar structure of the EB-PVD thermal barrier coatings consists of the core part with a fourfold pyramid and the peripheral part with a feather-like structure.

Measurement of strain distribution around weld zone for railway carbody structure using high-energy synchrotron radiation

The railway carbody structure for commuter and suburban services in Japan is often made of austenitic stainless steel, which is used as the thin metal sheets by cold rolling. To observe a strain distribution around weld zone, where is the critical area of the body structure strength, the strain scanning method by using high-energy synchrotron radiation was applied to the strain measurement of austenitic stainless steel. Two welded specimens at lapped splice were measured, one is 1.5 mm thick by spot welding joint, and another is 2.0 mm thick by laser welding joint. The sizes of gauge volume were a width of 2 or 3 mm and a height of 0.15 mm in this measurement. This measurement provides the strain distribution, which includes both residual strain and strain under loading. The result by this measurement shows strain distribution in the weld zone successfully. In addition, the different tendency to the distribution from residual strain and strain under loading made be clear.

Measurement of internal strain in materials using high energy white X-ray at SPring-8

In this paper, the strain in the bulk of material was measured using high energy white X-rays from synchrotron radiation sources of BL14B1 and BL28B2 at SPring-8 in Japan. JIS-S45C carbon steel and JIS-SHY685 high-tensile steel were used as specimens. As a result, the internal strain of SHY685 of 15 millimeters thickness could be evaluated using X-rays with energy of 155 keV diffracted by $$alpha$$-Fe321 lattice plane. It is suitable for the high accuracy measurement to include more than or equal to 5000 grains of crystal in the gauge volume. Furthermore, the measurement error peak count and the profile which is close to Gaussian curve. However, the measurement accuracy of the internal strain of S45C was relatively low. Because the diffracted X-ray peak counts at each measurement position fluctuated with the relationship between grain size of S45C and the irradiated X-ray beam size.

Improvement of neutron diffeactometer for residual stress analysis "RESA"

近年の中性子残留応力解析法の産業応用の増加に伴って、JRR-3に設置している中性子残留応力解析装置RESAの高度化が必須となり、非対称回折型モノクロメータ,広域波長選択,大型試料台,高性能1次元検出器,四半周オイラークレードル,試料揺動機構を導入している。これによって、試料位置での中性子強度は約1桁増加し、測定効率は約2桁増加するものと期待される。

Industrial application of neutron stress measurement in Japan

近年、各メーカは、生産コスト削減のために最も適切な製造工程の検討を行っている。特に、材料の製作や加工技術の向上,安価な材料への切り替えが検討されている。これらを再検討するためには、材料強度の安全性・信頼性の検討は最重要課題である。企業の多くはX線応力測定又は有限要素法(FEM)等によって応力・ひずみの評価を行っている。非破壊で材料内部の応力・ひずみを評価できるのは、中性子回折法だけである。日本では2006年より中性子利用技術移転推進プログラム(トライアルユース実験)を開始している。これまで行ってきたトライアルユース実験においては、ボイラー水管の応力評価,浸炭材の応力評価,大型構造物の測定を模擬した溶接材の応力分布評価等について行った。この会議ではトライアルユース実験で実施された幾つかの実験例を報告する。

Quantitative evaluations of microstructural factors by neutron diffraction for cold rolled austenitic stainless steels

冷間圧延ステンレス鋼板は集合組織や転位組織,粒間応力に依存して機械的特性に異方性を生じる。それゆえ、バルク平均としてこれらのミクロ組織因子を決定する必要がある。中性子回折法は、cmオーダーのバルク試料について、これらのミクロ組織因子を定量的に評価できる唯一の手段である。本研究では、中性子回折法を用いて2種類の冷間圧延ステンレス鋼の集合組織測定とプロファイル解析を行い、集合組織,転位組織,粒間応力などのミクロ組織因子を定量的に評価した。
